A quiet margin of paper around the image, the way a museum presents a print. It gives the artwork room to breathe.
On a framed canvas, the canvas sits inside the frame with a slim gap all the way round. In side light it casts a fine shadow, and the artwork seems to float off the wall.
The size you choose is the artwork itself. A frame adds about 4.5 cm on each side, so a framed piece is roughly 9 cm wider and taller on the wall.
The two-thirds rule. Choose art about two-thirds the width of the furniture below it. Between two sizes, go larger.
